This site was inspired by the famous quote from President Roosevelt. President Roosevelt stated that it is not the critic that counts. The credit goes to the person that is in the arena. The man whose face is marred by dust and sweat. The man that knows the great devotion. The man, though who fails while daring greatly, is not one of the cold souls who knows neiher victory nor defeat.
When a friend gave me a copy of that quote, the quote struck a cord with me. I identified with it; with the man in the arena who wanted to be something, who dared greatly. I had been raised by a single mom. When I was young my mom was on welfare and ived in public housing. She went through a period of physical and mental illness. for weeks at a time she was bedridden and my sister and I had to take care of her. At her lowest point, she attempted suicide and was committed to a state mental hospital. I remember as a kid being shuttled among family and friends. One day I said to my aunt, "I feel like a letter being mailed back and forth."
Even through that, I knew that this was not the life I was destined to have. I always knew I was destined for greatness. I knew that if I tried hard I could have a better life. I tried hard in school, participated in sports and did well. I lettered in varsity sports, set some school records and eventually graduated in the top ten of my class. I went off to college and through hard work, did well there too finishing in the top 25 of my college class, then went off to law school. After grauduating from law school, I studied for the bar exam. I knew that I had to pas the bar on the first try. So, under the glare of a florescent bulb at a desk in my aunt's basement, I reviewed study manuals, listed to law professors review legal concepts on audio tapes and studied twelve hours a day, six days a week (I took Sunday's off). Thankfully I passed the bar on my first try, became a lawyer and now use my degree in business.
Now, I want to give back. I want to inspire people, particulalry young people, that if they don't like the way thier life is going. Do something. Get in the arena; try; strive; Dare Greatly... and you will achieve greatness.
